Mumbai Indians Stun Delhi Capitals to End Unbeaten Streak in IPL 2025 Thriller

Mumbai Indians (MI) pulled off a stunning 12-run win over the in-form Delhi Capitals (DC) on Sunday night at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, ending DC’s unbeaten run in IPL 2025 and reviving their own struggling campaign.

Set a daunting target of 206, DC seemed in control thanks to a blistering 40-ball 89 from Karun Nair, playing his first IPL season since 2022. However, a dramatic collapse — including a hat-trick of run-outs in the penultimate over — saw them fall short, handing MI their second win in six games.

The victory means no team remains unbeaten in the tournament, with DC’s run halted at four consecutive wins.

Nair’s Brilliance Goes in Vain

Nair, returning to IPL after three years, rolled back the clock with a vintage knock. He tore into Jasprit Bumrah during the powerplay, taking 28 runs off just nine deliveries from the MI pace spearhead, and brought up a 22-ball fifty. His masterful strokeplay included flicks, sweeps, and audacious shots over extra cover.

Just as he seemed poised for a century, a turning delivery from Mitchell Santner clipped the top of off stump, dismissing Nair for 89. Moments later, Axar Patel fell to Bumrah, and the momentum started to shift.

Impact Sub Karn Sharma Turns the Tide

MI’s decision to bring in leg-spinner Karn Sharma as an Impact Player proved decisive. He bagged three wickets, including the crucial scalp of Tristan Stubbs, to trigger a collapse. The introduction of a new ball — permitted after the 11th over due to dew — helped MI find renewed grip and control.

DC’s lower middle-order, which had pulled off a heist against LSG earlier in the season, was this time unable to replicate the magic. Boult’s miserly 17th over and Santner’s flight and guile tightened the noose.

Hat-trick of Run-outs Seals the Win

Even with 15 needed off 8 balls, DC remained hopeful. But Jasprit Bumrah’s tight 19th over brought chaos. Ashutosh Sharma was run out while going for a second run, after a slight delay caused by running around the bowler. What followed was complete meltdown — Kuldeep Yadav and Mohit Sharma were run out off consecutive deliveries, handing MI a dramatic win sealed with a hat-trick of run-outs.

Tilak Varma, Naman Dhir Anchor MI's Total

Earlier, MI rode on Tilak Varma’s composed 59 off 43 balls and a late flourish from Naman Dhir (38 off 17) to post 205 for 5. The pair added 60 runs off 33 balls for the fifth wicket, lifting MI after a mid-innings wobble triggered by DC's spin duo Kuldeep Yadav and Vipraj Nigam, who shared four wickets between them.

Despite a strong start from Rohit Sharma and brief contributions from Suryakumar Yadav and Ryan Rickelton, MI were in danger of stalling at the halfway mark. But Tilak, in his first game back after being subbed out in an earlier fixture, delivered under pressure, recording his eighth IPL half-century — and his first in a winning cause.

Match Summary:

Mumbai Indians 205/5 (Tilak 59, Rickelton 41, Kuldeep 2-23)
beat
Delhi Capitals 193 (Nair 89, Porel 33, Karn 3-36)
